career consultant

1. I sincerely want to help people with their career development.  Work takes up at least 1/3 of our lives and I urge people to seek work that they find interesting, challenging, and rewarding.

2. I need to focus most of my time and energy on people who fit current assignments I am working on.  If you are not a match for a current assignment, I may not have time to meet with you right away.  I will try to help you over the telephone/email by providing information about career strategies, introducing you to a qualified colleague, helping you clarify your thinking, etc.  Unfortunately, due to the volume of inquiries, I cannot personally reply 100% of the time.

3. In general, I am working on only 5 active assignments at one time.  Unlike other search consultants, I am not handling too many assignments.  This allows me to focus on my client's needs as well as work in-depth with qualified candidates to get them through the interview process.  I may not have a match for you now, but if you send me your resume and tell me what you're looking for, I will be ready to help you when a good match comes up.

4. I will never push you into making a decision that is not right for you.  My objective is to help clarify issues and questions that you may have about an opportunity so that you can make a proper fully-informed decision.  If I feel strongly that an opportunity is great for you, I will urge you to go for it, but I won't put any unnecessary and unwanted pressure on you.

5. If there is anything urgent and/or you are waiting for some information or feedback from me, PLEASE give me a call.  Although I am working on limited assignments, sometimes things fall through the cracks.  If you are ever waiting for information or need to speak with me, please give me a call.  That is the fastest, most effective way to get in touch with me.

6. Please give me as much information about what you want to achieve both short term and long term.  Career planning is like a chess match in that a move made now can strongly impact a move that can be made 2 or 3 moves later.  The more I know about your goals the easier it is for me to identify opportunities that will help you get where you want to go.

7. Please be open with me about your salary records, past issues at work, companies that you have already applied to, etc.  Very few people have a perfect work record.  High performers especially have had issues with work when they are not being challenged or are in the wrong position.  If you got fired, I need to know that.  If you've changed jobs often, I need to know your reasons.  I also need to know an accurate figure for your current salary.  All of this information makes for a smoother process and better targeting of opportunities for you.

8. I understand that changing jobs is not always easy.  My last job change was one of the hardest things I've had to do in a long, long time, but I did it because I wanted to challenge myself in a new situation and further grow my skills as a professional recruiter.  I almost changed my mind.  I know how hard it is and I will be there for you to get through the process.

9. Send me your resume as the beginning of building a long-term relationship.  A resume is a tool that helps me get a quick "snapshot" of your past.  I take pride in thinking creatively for future opportunities and don't want to put you "in a box".  It is the easiest way for me to get an idea of where you have been so that we can discuss where you would like to go.

10. If you're happy with what I have done for you, you can help me by giving me information (name/job title/company/email) of people you think are professional SUPERSTARS, especially people in advertising and marketing, but not limited to that.  Many of my successful placements have come via introductions from people I know who have enjoyed working with me and have given me the names of people they recommend.  If you prefer to remain anonymous, I am happy to contact people in a way that they do not know you have given me their name.
